Below is a Map of the town we lived in.
The girls took photos of the places they enjoy visiting.

Project undertaken September 2004
I choose 4 of the best pictures the girls took for each area as we are running out of space on the server

The town is Port Alberni, Salmon Capital of the world they say.  It is at the end of an inlet that reaches out to the Pacific West Coast on Vancouver Island.  This town is in a valley surrounded by mountains.  I call it the valley of rainbows, as we see many rainbows throughout the year.
When we first moved to this town people would say why did you move here? Everyone is trying to leave.  It is a mill town, and has a history of air pollution from the mill, causing asthma in many children.  Over the years the mill has cleaned up its job, still burns rubber tires, still has toxic waste at the bottom of the river but better than in the past.
We  have lived  here 9 years seen a lot of shops open and close, many people move out and many houses on the market.  Over the past year or two many people have been buying in town and around sproat lake.  These people are families and elderly looking for a quiet unrushed home life.
Port Alberni has many nice trails. The local environmental coalition kindly put out a booklet called The Alberni Trail Guide which our family has enjoyed in exploring the area, along with the local hiking club www.justabunchahikers.ca  What the girls have taken photos of are some of the parks and recreational areas.  Touch the hands with your mouse to see photos the girls took of these areas...
