Summer
Stories, Books & Poems
June Morning
By Frances Frost
In the tangled grass of the sheep pasture,
Lying prone, I see
A grey grass hopper on a twig,
A green beetle teetering in a sun-glint,
Two ants fighting over a sliver of leaf,
A small bee swaying on a clover-blossom;
And my heart pounds softly against the turning earth.
May the Long Time Sun
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way home.
(Robert Williamson, Lyrics)
BOOKS
"The Kid's Summer Handbook" by Jane Drake and Ann Love is a great book just filled with projects including information on gardening with kids. It is geared for kids to read and do independently or with other kids and family members.
"The Element Illustrated Encyclopedia of Mind, Body, Spirit and Earth" by Joanna Crosse has a wealth of information on the spiritual aspects of growing a garden. She also includes information on Gaea, the Earth Goddess, Gods and Goddesses of many major Pagan paths, organic gardening, meditating in a garden, environmental awareness and energy from the earth for children, the Green Man, harvest rituals and more. This book has beautiful photography and illustrations.
"The Encyclopedia of Flowers" by Derek Fell. I especially like this book when trying to identify something already coming up in the yard, garden or woods. The full color photographs have also been a great guide in gardening homeschool lessons for the kids.
