The Moons cycle
The Lunar system contains thirteen cycles of the
moon (13 Full Moons, 13 New, 13 Dark).
It has been the idea that a blue moon occurs once a year, which means that
one month contains two Full Moons. Folklorist
Philip Hiscock traced the calendrical meaning of the term "Blue Moon"
to the Maine Farmers' Almanac for 1937. Instead of the calendar year running
from January 1st through December 31st, the almanac relies on the tropical year,
defined as extending from one winter solstice ("Yule") to the next.
Most tropical years contain 12 full Moons ‹ three each in winter, spring,
summer, and fall ‹ and each is named for an activity appropriate to the time
of year (such as the Harvest Moon in autumn). But occasionally a tropical year
contains 13 full Moons, such that one season has four rather than the usual
three. And that would be a blue moon.
During each lunar month, which begins with the New Moon and ends with the Dark Moon, the moon travels through all the astrology signs, taking 28-29 1/2 days to complete the cycle.
Rekindling the knowledge of Her cycle will enable us to celebrate life in a more wholistic way. Celebrating the cycles of the moon can be a meaningful way for women to recapture/remember our cyclical skills. We share a common bond with the moon, since our own menstrual cycles correspond to her rhythms.
