Totem Poles
Totem poles were made in North West
America. Oregon to Alaska is where they originated from. The natives
here weren't the type of people that would believe in Gods and Goddesses but
they did believe that everything had a spirit; good or bad.
The totem poles were used for house pillars and door ways, to remember
past chiefs and people. They put the ashes of the dead into the tops of
the poles. The totem pole told stories about the families. Sometimes
they created poles to shame a person.
When the missionaries came they thought the poles were pagan, so they burnt them all. The natives weren't allowed to make any totem poles until the law changed in 1951.
